What is allergy toothpaste?
Allergy toothpaste is a patented, specially formulated, flavored Oral Mucosal Immunotherapy (OMIT) designed to contain multiple allergens, just like allergy shots or allergy drops. Phenol-free (unless unavailable) allergens are mixed into the fluoride-free toothpaste base by our pharmacist according to your prescriber’s prescription. You use allergy toothpaste to self-administer the allergens orally during the daily habit of brushing your teeth. Because allergy toothpaste combines immunotherapy with an activity that most everybody engages in daily (oral care), your ability to stick to a long-term, daily administration schedule is made much easier.
Who May Use Allergy Toothpaste?
- Children and adults
- People with multiple allergies, including pollens, molds, pet dander, or dust mites
- People who are not able to commit to weekly allergy shots or prefer a more convenient therapy
- People with side effects to allergy medications or reactions to allergy shots
- Allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, conjunctivitis or asthma sufferers
What is the Latest Research?
A recent clinical investigation at Weill Cornell Medical College compared OMIT and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) in patients with allergic rhinitis. Results showed similar safety profiles and efficacy rates between the two treatment methods. Patients adherence to allergy toothpaste is similar to allergy drops and much higher than allergy shots.
