For Primary Care Physicians:

Pediatrics: Allergic conditions rank first among children’s chronic diseases, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology (ACAAI). A child's immune system may be affected early in life and an "allergic march" can occur that could result in asthma or other allergic developments such as chronic otitis media, eczema, and wheezing. Early intervention and treatment, however, may make a profound difference in the long-term well-being of a child.

Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) has proven to be an effective therapy in children with asthma, food allergies, inhalant allergies, rhinoconjunctivitis and allergic rhinitis. A meta-analysis of SLIT in the pediatric population revealed a significant reduction in symptoms and medication use scores. SLIT administered in children older than 18 months showed the most significant improvements.

(Penagos M. et al., Efficacy of SLIT in the treatment of, double blind studies, in pediatric patients 3 to 18 years of age: a meta-analysis of randomized, placebo controlled double blind studies, Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol, 2006, 97, pp 141-148.)

Family Medicine: Family physicians treat more chronic illnesses than other specialties, and are qualified to provide comprehensive medical care to all members of the family, as stated by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Respiratory conditions are considered to be among the top five chronic illnesses. In order to assist family physicians in the treatment of respiratory conditions, Embrace Pharmacy offers sublingual immunotherapy as an alternative treatment regarding the care of their allergic patients. SLIT allows family physicians the ability to better treat allergies without having to refer their patients to a specialist. This may lead to better patient therapy compliance.
