How do allergy drops work?
Typically in the United States, immunotherapy has been given weekly as a shot or injection in the doctor’s office. Using allergy drops once daily under the tongue (sublingual) at home has been proven to be as effective as injections for many patients and may be safer. It has been used for over 30 years in Europe. It is also called sublingual immunotherapy, or SLIT.
Are allergy drops safe?
The simple treatment technique – a few drops of antigen under the tongue – is usually safe enough for everyone. Time has proven allergy drops to be very safe. There are several studies that compare allergy drop therapy with shot therapy, and they have generally shown that the allergy drops method is safer than allergy shots. The allergy drop technique has been endorsed by the World Health Organization as a "viable alternative" to shot therapy, and recently has been discussed favorably in the Cochrane Review.
Fewer Doctor Visits
Patients using allergy drops will most likely need to see their doctor for a checkup much less frequently than patients using injection therapy.
